What Is a D20 Die and Why Is It Used?

The 20-sided die, mathematically known as a regular icosahedron, is the central pillar of modern tabletop roleplaying systems. When an adventurer swings a sword, attempts to pick a complicated lock, or dodges a blast of dragon breath, a d20 dice roller determines whether the action succeeds or fails.

Each of the 20 triangular faces has an exact 5.0% probability of landing on any single toss. Unlike curved or clustered sums like 2d6, a single d20 has a perfectly flat uniform distribution: a 1 is just as likely as a 10, which is just as likely as a 20.

Advantage and Disadvantage Explained

In modern fifth-edition rulesets, circumstantial bonuses are frequently resolved through Advantage and Disadvantage rather than fiddly numerical modifiers:

  • Advantage: Roll two 20-sided dice and keep the higher result (notation: 2d20kh1 or d20 adv). This increases your chance of rolling a 15 or higher from 30% to 51%, and raises your critical hit chance from 5% to 9.75%.
  • Disadvantage: Roll two 20-sided dice and keep the lower result (notation: 2d20kl1 or d20 dis). This drops your average roll from 10.5 down to 7.17, severely punishing impaired actions.

Natural 20s and Natural 1s (Critical Events)

In tabletop gaming culture, rolling the highest number on the die (a "Natural 20") represents an extraordinary triumph or critical strike, regardless of your standard modifier bonuses. Conversely, a "Natural 1" signifies a critical blunder or automatic failure.

Our virtual roller highlights these dramatic moments with distinct animations: a glowing emerald pulse with celebratory confetti for a Natural 20, and a sharp crimson shake for a Natural 1.

Mathematical Probability of a 20-Sided Die

Because an unbiased icosahedron has 20 congruent faces, each individual integer outcome from 1 to 20 shares an identical 1/20 chance (5.0%). Review the exact cumulative odds below to calculate target Difficulty Classes (DC) or Armor Class (AC) hits:

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the odds of rolling a natural 20 on a d20? ↓

On a standard roll, the odds are exactly 1 in 20, or 5.0%. When rolling with Advantage, your probability of at least one 20 increases to 9.75% (39 in 400). With Disadvantage, the odds drop to 0.25% (1 in 400).

What is the average roll of a d20? ↓

The mathematical expected value (mean) of a single d20 is (1 + 20) / 2 = 10.5. With Advantage, the expected value climbs to 13.825. With Disadvantage, it falls to 7.175.

Can I add modifiers to my d20 roll? ↓

Yes. Type expressions like 1d20+5, d20+7, or 1d20-2 into the notation field to add or subtract ability scores and proficiency bonuses automatically.
